The facility was designed to fill the University’s desire to create a dynamic environment to bring a variety of science disciplines and subject matters together to energize and create a culture that is integrative and stimulating. This CUTTING EDGE Research Center will house Physics and Astronomy as well as Interdisciplinary Sciences including the Center for Stable Isotopes, Bioinformatics and Genomics, Comparative Human Primate Physiology Center, Radiocarbon Center, Spatial Data Center, Transmission Electron Microscope and Photonics, and Optics Research.
The facility includes an interior living room, laboratories, classrooms, a larger Colloquium classroom, offices and group focused spaces. The demand for high performance, low vibration research space criterion E (VC-E) – 3.12 microns/second, minimization of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), combined with specific environmental condition controls, was a prime driver for the creation of the 4-story, High-Performance Laboratory Block that will not only meet today’s needs, but provide adaptability and flexibility to address tomorrow’s research programs. The project included the removal of a 60,000sf reservoir built in 1924. The project will achieve LEED Gold certification.
