New Mexico Tech’s new 40,000sf Chemistry Building provides the university with a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility. With its expanding enrollment and commitment to leading-edge research, the facility is designed with an emphasis on collaborations, dynamic learning, lab and infrastructure flexibility, technological sophistication, and focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. The building is programmed around a spacious three-story atrium that links it to the pedestrian pathways of the surrounding campus. The laboratories open up to the atrium with glass windows to put science on display and to make the educational experience more visible. A modular floor plan addresses lab flexibility and allows the university to quickly respond to changes in research and teaching missions and goals. Sustainability is advanced through the use of materials with recycled content, building envelope, controlled natural light, overhangs, separation of labs and offices for more efficient HVAC performance, glazing, insulation, and water conservation. The building is designed and constructed to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
